The First World War Had Many Causes; The Historians Probably Have Not

The First World War had many causes; the historians probably have not yet discovered and discussed all of them so there might be more causes than what we know now. The spark of the Great War was the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife by a Serbian nationalist on the morning of June 28, 1914, while traveling in a motorcade through Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Archduke was chosen as a target because Serbians feared that after his ascension to the throne, he would continue the persecution of Serbs living within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Serbian terrorist organization, the Black Hand, had trained a small group of teenage operatives to infiltrate Bosnia and carry out the assassination of the Archduke. It is unclear how officially active the Serbian government was in the plot. However, it was uncovered years later that the leader of the Black Hand was also the head of Serbian military intelligence. In order to understand the complexity of the causes of the war, it is very helpful to know what was the opinion of the contemporaries about the causes of the Great War. In the reprint of the article "What Started the War", from August 17, 1915 issue of The Clock magazine published on the Internet the author writes: "It is thought that this war that is been ongoing for over a year, began with the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand. However, many other reasons led to this war, some occurring as far back the late 1800's. Nationalism, militarism, imperialism, and the system of alliances were four main factors that pressed the great powers towards this explosive war." According to the article above, the author stresses that the nationalism was one of the primary causes of the war. In the ninetieth and twentieth centuries, especially after the French Revolution nationalism was becoming a powerful force in Europe so people that had the same culture, language wanted their own country. And that was the problem for the government of Austria-Hungary that did not want to lose their power and control. The Slavs in the southern part of the empire were their main concern since they wanted to join up to Serbia. Militarism is the second cause according to the article above, which comes after the nationalism. To understand what the author means by militarism one should be familiar with the situation of the world in the beginning of the century, which was the result of both industrial and democratic revolutions. Britain at that time was the largest empire in the world, and it also had the largest navy. The navy was so big and strong because the Britons needed to protect their empire and maintain the sea routes between the different colonies. The Kaiser William II of Germany hated and envied Britain for having a stronger navy than his. He increased the German navy and built many warships. Britain responded with building more ships and increasing its navy too. This started a race for building more and better warships and it created tension and competition between those two countries. Imperialism and the system of alliances are the last two major causes of the War. There was a quarrel between France and Germany about controlling the colonies, and especially Morocco, which leads to a greater conflict, the Great War. Europe at that time was divided into two rival alliance systems: Triple Entente that included Great Britain, France, and Russia and the Triple Alliance, which included the Central Powers of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and eventually the Ottoman Turkish Empire. Austria-Hungary must take a large proportion of any blame for the outbreak of war in 1914. The reason for Germany's part in the causes involves Germany's "blank Check" policy. Before sending its ultimatum to Serbia, Austria needed to be sure of the support of its ally, Germany. Such support was forthcoming in the form of a telegram to the Emperor Franz Joseph on 6 July 1914. The telegram has become known to history as the "Blank Check". In order to balance the power, France and Russia signed an alliance. Russia saw itself as the 'protector of Slavs' in the war, and immediately mobilized. When the war began, the German decision that if they were going to have to fight Russia and France, they would strike at France first according to its Schlieffen Plan, and then turn West to Russia. The Life of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was a bizarre and often scary writer. People throughout history have often wondered why his writings were so fantastically different and unusual. They were not the result of a diseased mind, as some think. Rather they came from a tense and miserable life. Edgar Allan Poe was not a happy man. He was a victim of fate from the moment he was born to his death only forty years later. He died alone and unappreciated. It is quite obvious that his life affected his writings in a great way. In order to understand why, the historical background of Poe must be known. Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. His parents were touring actors and both died before he was three years old. After this, he was taken into the home of John Allan, a prosperous merchant who lived in Richmond, Virginia.1 When he was six, he studied in England for five years. Not much else is known about his childhood, except that it was uneventful. In 1826, when Poe was seventeen years old he entered the University of Virginia. It was also at this time that he was engaged to marry his childhood sweetheart, Sarah Elmira Royster. He was a good student, but only stayed for a year. He did not have enough money to make ends meet, so he ran up extremely large gambling debts to trying make more money. Then he could not afford to go to school anymore. John Allan refused to pay off Poe's debts, and broke off his engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster. Since Poe had no other means of support, he enlisted in the army. By this time however, he had written and printed his first book, Tammerlane, and Minor Poems (1829).2 After a few months though, John Allan and Poe were reconciled. Allan arranged for Poe to be released from the army and enrolled him at West Point. During this time, his fellow cadets helped him publish another book of poetry. However, John Allan again did not provide Poe with enough money, and Poe decided to leave this time before racking up any more debts Still, Poe had no money and necessity forced him to live with his aunt, Mrs. Clemm, in Baltimore, Maryland. None of his poetry had sold particularly well, so he decided to write stories. He could find no publisher for his stories, and so resorted to entering writing contests to make money and receive exposure. In fact, upon examining the women in Poe's stories, we find that they bear striking resemblance to the mother that Poe never had. So one gets a glimpse at how Poe's life, filled with insurmountable obstacles and full of disappointments, indeed played a role in his writing. A good comparison would be Vincent Van Gogh. He also endured hardship and died at an early age. Poe was only forty when he passed away. Insignificant in his lifetime, it was only after his death that he was appreciated. He is now acclaimed as one of the greatest writers in American history. It is indeed a pity that he will never know or care.

Possibly, Adam and Eve could ommunicate with animals, but again that is pure speculation. Satan begins the temptation with a question, â€Å"Hath God not said Ye shall no eat of every tree of the garden? â€Å"(Gen. 3: 1) This is the way of Satan to bring into question what God has plainly stated. It is actually bringing God Himself into question. To question God is suggest that God could be wrong, or have some evil reason for what He says. Eve's response was to correct Satan's question, by stating that she and Adam could eat of all the trees of the garden except the one tree called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.Eve goes on further to say they could not eat or â€Å"touch† it lest they die. God had said in Genesis 2:17, that they should not eat it. God did not say anything about touching it. This addition to what God had said seems to indicate that Eve resented the fact of God prohibition not to eat of that particular tree. On the other hand, it could mean that she was indicating her understanding that God did not want them to have anything to do with this tree. God said not to eat the fruit; she concluded she shouldn't even touch it. Eve then allowed herself to be deceived in three areas.First, Eve saw the fruit was good for food, appealing to the flesh and bodily senses. Second, She saw it was pretty, appealing to the emotions, and third, it appealed to her mind and intellect, in that she wanted to be wise. Eve then proceeded to give the fruit to Adam, and he ate the fruit. Genesis 3:7 states that after Adam sinned, both their eyes were opened and they saw themselves as naked and they became ashamed. They had submitted to temptation, they had been plunged down into the depths of destruction. What an awful realization it must have been. What emptiness and depths of shame they must have felt.Basic Words of Sin Ryrie stated in his book † Basic Theology' that there are eight basic words for sin in the Old Testament; I will go through a word study of the basic words of sin. Chata is the basic word for sin; its basic meaning of sin is missing the mark. It's also correspondent to the Greek word hamartano. Chata is seen in the Old Testament 522 times. Ra is another word used in the Old Testament; it was use about 444 times. It's equivalent to the words kakos and poneros. The basic meaning of Ra is breaking up or ruin, it has also been translated to the word wicked, and it often means calamities.The basic meaning of Pasha is to rebel; it is often translated to transgression. The word Awon is often used in connection with suffering and servant, and with defiant sin. It also includes the ideas of guilt and iniquity. Shagag means err or go astray. It calls an account to the error as the one committing the error to be responsible. The word Asham was found many times in connection with the ritual of the tabernacale, the main idea is the guil t betore God. It includes botn intentional and unintentional guilt, because it ent itles the guilt and sin offerings.Rasha was a word that was not sed as much before the Exile, it means to be wicked. The last word Taah means to go astray or wander away. Taah means the sin is deliberate, and it was not accidental, even if the person might not realize it. Ryrie made a few things clear in his word study of the words from the New Testament. First sin comes in many different forms. Secondly sin is and will always be disobedient to God. Lastly, Ryrie states that â€Å"disobedience involved both positive and negative ideas, the emphasis is on the positive commission of wrong and not merely on the negative omission of good.Basically Sin was not only missing the mark, but also hitting the wrong mark. Their twelve basic words of sin displayed in the New Testament; I will conduct a word study from the different definitions given in â€Å"Basic Theology' by Ryrie. The word Kakos means bad, it can be used for physical badness, but it usually indicates moral badness. The word Poneros is a term that means evil, and mostly always implies moral evil. Asebes is a word that means godless; it appears with other words that mean sin. Enochos is a word that means guilty, it also means that there crime was punishable by death.Hamartia was a word that was used at least 227 times in the New Testament; It was used in many different forms. It was said to use the same representation as the statement from the word study in the Old Testament, missing the mark. As well as having that negative idea, it proposes the good idea of hitting the wrong mark. Adikia means any unrighteous conduct, its mainly used in the context of unsaved people. Anomos is a word that means lawless, or basically breaking the law. It can also be translated to iniquity. The word Parabates means transgressor, it usually relates to violations of the law.When referring to ignorant worship, or worshiping something or someone other then the true God, its called Agnoein. The word Planao means to go astray . Paraptoma is a word that means to fall away, and is commonly seen to be deliberate. The last word is Hypocrisis, it has three ideas that help demonstrate its meaning. The first idea is interpret falsely, the second idea is to pretend like and actor does, and the last one is to follow an interpretation that you already know is false. Racism plays important roles in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. The author uses racism to describe the characters and the culture represented in the stories. In The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini uses prejudice as a tool to tell this story of betrayal and redemption. He pursues his story with prejudice and racism in Afghanistan as well as in the United States. While the author uses individual characters to tell the story, he portrays the general attitudes and history associated with the characters’ Hazara and Pashtun ethnic origins and the conflicts that arise in Afghanistan. Throughout history and even while the story was taking place in the 70’s the US of A was going through their tough times with racism and prejudice thoughts and acts towards other ethnical groups such as the blacks, Asians and Latino’s. Although during this present era these racist acts and thoughts have been cut down and have been limited to just some states in the south as where in Afghanistan these prejudice acts still exist. Ali and Hassan represent the marginalized group in this story. They are considered by the ruling class to be of lesser value due to their ethnic origin, religious beliefs, appearance and social standing. The author gives us a glance of this when Amir reads about the harassment of, and attempted uprising of the Hazara, and how Amir’s people, the Pashtuns had: â€Å"†¦quelled them with unspeakable violence†. The disregard that people have for the Hazara is reinforced when Amir asks his teacher about what he has read and he responds by saying, â€Å"That’s one thing Shi’a people do well, passing themselves as martyrs†. Assef shows how internalized this hostility is when he says to Amir and Hassan, â€Å"Afghanistan is the land of the Pashtuns. It always has been, always will be. We are the true Afghans, the pure Afghans, not this Flat-Nose here†.

the war between us essays It must have been very traumatic for the Japanese-Canadian families to be faced with internment and then deportation. From the very beginning they must have been faced with utter confusion and must have been left with some very disturbing unanswerable questions. Such as wondering why they had to move from their homes, where they were going, what would happen to their home and possessions that they had spent all of their life establishing, and what will happen next to their family. It must have been very confusing for them to understand what was happening and would have been entering their newly appointed town with a great fear. To go with this there is the equal fear and concern which was instilled in the families that lived in the towns where the Japanese people moved to. Those people did not know what to expect from their new neighbors and did not want them there, only agreeing with the promise of new jobs and electricity from the Canadian government. The overall fear of the townspeople was clearly symbolized when Mary Janes mother locked her doors when she saw the Japanese move into the shack behind her own home. From there, the relationship between the Japanese-Canadians, and the people who originally lived in the town generally improved accept for the odd few people who had trouble associating with one another such as the two teenagers who got into the fight in the street. At the same time however the were severe internal family problems that existed. There was the issue of the personal respect that the Japanese people had for themselves and family, and did not want their families working for the white people of the town, or taking charities. They also could not tolerate the way that the town people looked down on them, such as the man suggesting that Iia would learn good skills working at the new store. Eventually most of the Japanese-Canadians settled to live in their new homes, got jobs ...
